Jennifer had put in extra overtime for this - though Set himself had arranged the servers, made of sand and storm - but the stage was set. The glossy black bar was stocked fully with any kind of alcohol you could ever desire, including a selection of Egyptian microbrews. To the right of it, the dessert bar - staffed by two lithe, sloe-eyed girls - has any sweet you might desire, from a chocolate fountain to creme brulee to a dense raspberry torte.

There are the low couches by the windows, where the waiters pass with French champagne and canapes regularly, and for those who don't mind the chill, there are the vast decks just outside, where you can appreciate the sight of New York on this night, or...possibly find some privacy for that New Year's kiss.

Set cast a sidelong look at Sakhmet. He would be very surprised if anyone in Egypt would be pleased to see him - he'd stayed in the desert for reasons. "And then what do you think, cousin?"

"Family is family. While they may have wished you to leave, that is not to say they never wanted to see you again. Despite it all, you are just as important to the order of things as anyone else is..."

She didn't look over at him, even though she felt his gaze on her. She took another sip of her drink. "None of them would ever admit outright, either, the peace of mind that seeing you would bring."

Her eyes flickered to the clock. "The new year is almost upon us."

There was much he could say to that - he could hear his sister Isis' rage if he appeared again, Nephthys had been consumed with jealous anger for all of their lives, and none of the others had anything positive to say about him - but instead he was silent as Sakhmet pointed out the time.

"So it is," he said quietly. "Who will you begin it with?"

Sakhmet preferred that he not voice any of that. She knew neither could change the other's mind, and she grew bored of the attempt.

She shrugged her shoulders fluidly. "I'm not sure, but I feel as though I'm running out of time to pick, aren't I?"

Set lifted his eyebrows. "It is true you are running short on time, cousin." He finished his scotch and smiled. "But somehow I doubt you'll have difficulty with whomever you choose."

Sakhmet's lips curved as she glanced over at Set. "You flatter me, dear..."

She paused thoughtfully, then tilted her head. "And if I were to choose you?"

It was difficult to surprise Set, and even more difficult to surprise him to the degree that he looked it. Sakhmet had managed.

"Now you flatter me, darling," he said after a moment. "But of course, as host it would be rude to refuse."

That was the exact reaction the warrior goddess had been aiming for... And it only stretched the curve of her lips even more. Of course, explaining her reasoning would go against everything she'd just managed to get from him, so she didn't bother.

The main reason was because Ptah wasn't present, which was fair enough... She'd always pick her consort over any others really. "You would refuse me otherwise? Now that's not very kind, my dear."

"Nephthys would tell you I'm notoriously picky, were she here." Speaking of - thank all the gods and forces of the universe that she wasn't. If his family was showing up, Nephthys ranked somewhere below Osiris in his list of people he wanted to see come through the door.

Sakhmet laughed, the tone rich and warm. "And I'm certain Ptah would tell you the same of myself," she countered. "Though, perhaps I am not as picky as you are."

Set inclined his head. "Perhaps not," he acknowledged, and he set down his drink as a chorus of divine voices began the annual countdown.

Sakhmet tilted her head, listening to the countdown with an amused smirk. "šomte..... snte..... ouei," she counted down with them.

Her grin widened and she raised her eyebrows at Set. "Happy New Year, dear," she cooed, leaning in for a quick peck on the lips at the very least.

Set tipped his head down and deepened the kiss just slightly as fireworks went off over the water at just exactly midnight, and then he leaned back. "Happy New Year, cousin."

Sakhmet grinned, watching the fireworks for a moment. "Either I'm seeing fireworks, or you're a better kisser than I thought," she mused, glancing back at her cousin.

"I only wish I could take the credit," Set said dryly as he picked up his drink again. "No, I arranged them. They add a lovely sparkle to the evening."

"Well, you still take the credit, since it was your arrangement."

Sakhmet picked her drink up and took a long sip of it, grinning toothily. "You certainly don't do things halfway in the mortal realm, do you dear?"

"Of course not," Set said blithely as he finished his scotch. "Where's the fun in that, my dear?"

"I'm glad I do not have to follow this with a party of my own... I fear I may not have lived up to any expectations."

Sakhmet took one last sip of her drink before scanning the crowd. "I'm very impressed, if I haven't said that enough already."

Set smiled. "I believe we've run out of party occasions until next month, when the reins go back to the Greeks."

He leaned against the bar. "Thank you, my dear. I feel I've done relatively well for myself lately, and I did want this occasion to reflect that."

"You need an occasion to throw a party? But thank the heavens the Greeks have control over the next..."

Sakhmet's lips curled. "It certainly reflects it, Set. You have done very well... Relatively is an understatement."
